A Moment Aside --- 1 June 2021
What is often forgotten is praying to be in a relationship
with God. When we meet and greet a friend, it isn’t always to ask a favor or
see if we can borrow something. When friends meet, they listen to each other
when they say how they are, what might be bothering them, or what they are
happy about. When friends meet, they share their lives with each other, often
over a cup of coffee or a simple meal. What becomes important is the time
together.
In many ways, prayer is the same way. We may gain what we ask
for. We may lose what holds us back or poisons our dealings with others. We may
cry on the shoulder of the one who loves us more than we love ourselves. We may
share our joy or our laughter, just as we would with any friend. Prayer need
not be a business transaction or a session of fearful praise.
In the end, prayer will change us. Should we be open to it,
we can become what God wishes us to be here and now and in the times to come.
Remember that the Lord’s Prayer begins with a statement of
relationship. It begins…
Father in heaven…
