Were we to look back over our lives as we have lived them, we might be happy or we might be ashamed. We might be shocked at what we'd left undone or we might be amazed at how far we've come.
Looking over our shoulder, what we might miss is what Pastor Bonhoeffer speaks of here. Looking back we might be stunned at the messes we've made or the sins we've fallen into. We might wince and squirm at all the mistakes and missteps. Sometimes those obscure what really has been going on.
Our pasts are full of God's mercy and not a mercy grudgingly given and sparsely sown. That mercy flows from "the forgiving love of the Crucified."
I hope we might all remember that and take courage to live on in the love of Jesus Christ.
