Dec 17 – Thursday (the beginning of the “O Antiphons”)
O come, O Wisdom from on high…
O Wisdom of our God Most High,
guiding creation with power and love:
come to teach us the path of knowledge!
Hebrews 1:1-4
1:1 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. 3 He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
“The lack of mystery in our
modern life is our downfall and our poverty. A human life is worth as much as
the respect it holds for the mystery. We retain the child in us to the extent
that we honor the mystery. Therefore, children have open, wide-awake eyes,
because they know that they are surrounded by the mystery. They are not yet
finished with this world; they still don’t know how to struggle along and avoid
the mystery, as we do. We destroy the mystery because we sense that here we
reach the boundary of our being, because we want to be lord over everything and
have it at our disposal, and that’s just what we cannot do with the mystery
