A Moment Aside --- 10 August 2021
We all know the story of
David and Goliath. David faced down Goliath with just a sling and a pouch of
stones. He refused armour, helmet, sword, and shield. The sling he carried was
weapon enough. At the time, this really was a deadly weapon. Men skilled with
the sling were sought after by many countries. A well-placed sling-stone could
knock a man unconscious, cause a nasty wound, or even kill a man.
So while Goliath was
blustering and bragging, David was looking for the right stones to use – heavy
enough to hit hard and light enough to carry and sling right.
… And we know how the
story ends.
If we know what is asked
of us as Christians, we can get on with the business at hand and ignore the
bluster and brag, the abuse and mockery that might come our way. We defeat such
attitudes not by throwing rocks, but by doing and being what faith calls us to
be.
What are we to do? Simply
this…
He has told
you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6: 8)
And
I give you a new commandment,
that you love one another.
Just as I have loved you,
you also should love one another.
By this everyone will know
that you are my disciples,
if you have love for one
another. (John 13: 34-35)
