A Moment Aside --- 13 August 2021
The Bible is the written responses of people to the activities of God in their lives and the lives of God’s people. It challenges us. It drives us on and pulls us forward. In some sense, it is “our” book.
The Bible will cause us to
look at ourselves. If we like what we see, a second look will be needed since
we cannot save ourselves. If we DON’T like what we see, a second look is
certainly required. The Bible also “convicts” us and make us look at the
reality of our lives. (I never liked that phrase, “convicts”, because I’ve
heard it used as a sort of ‘humble-brag’, or a way of saying “I heard God’s
voice… have you? Well, I must be a better believer.”)
If we don’t like with we
see, a second deeper look is needed. The Bible will point out our sinfulness,
moral failures, mistakes, or what-ever we want to call them. The Bible also
proclaims the forgiveness and freedom of grace. That is just what we need to hear. I’d want to hear it often.
Sone one once said “The
truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable.” This the short
form of what was said at the top of the page. Freedom will come and real
freedom is a gift.
Hear the words of the
writer of the letter to the Hebrews:
Indeed, the word of God is
living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides
soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and
intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
