A
Moment Aside --- 19 August 2021
"Christ has no body
now, but yours. No hands, no feet on earth, but yours. Yours are the
eyes through which Christ looks compassion into the world. Yours are the
feet with which Christ walks to do good. Yours are the
hands with which Christ blesses the world."
These
are the words of Theresa of Avila, a Spanish Carmelite nun who was instrumental
in the reform of her religious order. She and Martin Luther probably would not
see eye to eye on very much. I think that they’d agree on this point however.
As
Christians, we are to be “little Christs” to each other (to use Luther’s
words.) As people of faith, it is our mission and ministry to reflect the light
of Christ in the world. The church building is not there for that, because –
let’s face it – most of us spend only about an hour or so a week in a building
like that. Our faith is exercised in the rest of the week. Let’s hear all those
words again:
"Christ has no body
now, but yours. No hands, no feet on earth, but yours. Yours are the
eyes through which Christ looks compassion into the world. Yours are the
feet with which Christ walks to do good. Yours are the
hands with which Christ blesses the world."
“It is the duty of every
Christian to be Christ to his neighbor.”
